Independence For Catalonia

 

A peaceful vote, but it will not be allowed

The old powers will go valiantly into battle

Cutting, cutting off their rights to sound

 

Violence answers the protesting mound

Because strangling free ideas is now justified

To build a state for citizens votes

The people have reason to scream aloud

Media, education, protection at mercy of the holder

With a Constitution in hand, and a dilemma to accept

In light of an election, freedom could be renowned

If they accept control, and let Madrid home

As damages to both have been but fierce

Although Catalonians have felt the Spanish wrath against their attempted self-governing for years, it was only just this past week that the proclamation of independence by the Catalan Republic was officially made. In the past, the Spanish government has voiced their protests to the idea of freedom for Catalonia. On October 1st, after a referendum on independence, Spain immediately pushed to move firms and pressure large companies out of Catalonia- an economic punishment for their rebellious actions. This damage to the country is a long-standing habit on Spain’s part, an obvious silencer toward the people’s ideals. Since their proclamation, Catalans have faced a Spanish invasion of brutality, as the Madrid Senate voted in government control over Catalonia. Recently, the crisis has come to an abrupt halt, as Spain’s prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, announced the new regional elections to be held on December 21st, leaving secessionists to temporarily accept Madrid’s control in the wake of vigorous campaigning.
